Be an Eagle Not a Duck — The Eighth Commandment
Are They an Eagle or a Duck? Why Expertise and Enthusiasm Matter in Real Estate
In the world of real estate investment, success isn’t just about the numbers; it’s profoundly shaped by the people you work with, and the person you are. This brings us to a key principle:
Be an Eagle, not a Duck.
What does it mean to be an “Eagle” in this context? Eagles are the top-flight professionals ā the kind of people you want leading your investments and building your legacy. They are:
- Enthusiastic: They approach their work with genuine passion and energy.
- Sharp as a Tack: They possess keen intellect and an incisive understanding of their field.
- Experts in their Field: They have deep knowledge, proven experience, and a track record of knowing what they’re doing. They look smart, they sound smart, and they go forth and conquer.
These are the individuals you want on your team.
On the flip side, we have the “Ducks.” Ducks, as the saying goes, “waddle around and quack, quack, quack all over the place and just make a mess of everything.” They tend to be:
- Sloppy: Their personal habits or professional approach might be disorganized.
- Lacking Direction: They might jump from one strategy or business to another without clear focus.
- Disorganized: They often contribute to a messy and chaotic environment.
No one wants to work with a “Duck” ā not other Eagles, and certainly not investors who are serious about their capital.
To truly be an Eagle, beyond enthusiasm and expertise, sponsors also need to ensure they “don’t say or do stupid.” This means demonstrating sound judgment in both your words and actions, consistently, and without making avoidable mistakes.
By striving to be enthusiastic, sharp, and an expert in their field, you can ensure that you are working with professionals and find opportunities, paving the way for true investment success.
